Wiyaala is the stage name of Noella Wiyaala Nwadei. She is a Ghanaian Afro-pop singer-songwriter from Tema, which is Ghana’s largest seaport. Her musical career began at the age of 5 when she took singing lessons from her music teacher mother and sang in her local church choir. She sings in local languages Sissala and Waala as well as English, often combining all three languages within her songs. Wiyaala means “the doer” in the Sissala dialect. After making her name in reality shows in Ghana’s capital Accra, she established a solo career in 2013 with the hit single “Rock My Body.” She has since become renowned in her home country for her ability to mix modernity and tradition with her musical style, androgynous image and advocacy for women’s rights.
