“Keep On Pushing,” released in 1964 by ABC-Paramount, is a seminal album by The Impressions, comprising Sam Gooden, Curtis Mayfield, and Fred Cash. The album is notable for its socio-political content, particularly the title track, which is regarded as one of Curtis Mayfield’s earliest Black pride anthems.
Curtis Mayfield, serving as lead vocalist, guitarist, producer, and primary songwriter, was supported by The Funk Brothers for instrumentation. The album includes “Amen,” a traditional African-American spiritual previously performed by Jester Hairston in the 1963 film “Lilies of the Field.”
The album achieved commercial success, reaching the top 10 on both Billboard Pop and R&B charts, with the title track becoming a top 10 hit. Notably, the song was later used as the theme for Barack Obama’s keynote address at the Democratic National Convention when he was an Illinois State Senator.
The album cover, photographed by Don Bronstein, depicts the group pushing Mayfield’s Jaguar E-Type, humorously misinterpreting the title’s actual message of perseverance and civil rights.
“Keep On Pushing” remains a significant album in soul music history, celebrated for its musical quality and powerful social commentary. It stands as a testament to The Impressions’ contributions to both the genre and the civil rights movement.
