“Overkill” is the second studio album by Motörhead. Released in March 1979, it marked their debut with Bronze Records. The album received considerable recognition and achieved a notable feat by securing the 46th spot in Kerrang! magazine’s compilation of the “100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time.” It is also worth mentioning that the American thrash metal band, Overkill, derived their name from this particular album.
The album achieved an unexpected level of success, reaching No. 24 on the UK Albums Chart. This record is often regarded as a significant improvement over the band’s debut, as it laid the groundwork for their iconic sound that many fans still adore today. AllMusic stated that, “Motörhead’s landmark second album, Overkill, marked a major leap forward for the band, and it remains one of their all-time best, without question. In fact, some fans consider it their single best, topping even Ace of Spades. It’s a ferocious album, for sure, perfectly showcasing Motörhead’s trademark style of no holds barred proto-thrash – a kind of punk-inflected heavy metal style that is sloppy and raw yet forceful and in your face.”
Writing in the 2011 book Overkill: The Untold Story of Motörhead, biographer Joel McIver called the album “a revelation. To this day it contains six all-time classics, which is saying something from a band whose career has lasted 35 years or more.”The album cover was designed by American artist Joe Petagno. Although he was generally unhappy with his work for the sleeve due to the limited time frame he was given to finish it, he went on to provide future artwork for almost every other Motorhead release.
