“Jolene” is the thirteenth standalone studio album by renowned American artist, Dolly Parton. Released on 4th February 1974 by RCA Victor, the album features the title track, which narrates the story of a wife confronting another woman she suspects is having an affair with her husband. This song marked Parton’s second solo number-one country single and also achieved moderate success in pop music, especially in the UK. Since digital downloads were introduced to the Official Chart in 2005, “Jolene” has accumulated over 255,300 downloads and approximately 6.68 million streams. The song has inspired numerous cover versions by various artists over time.
The album was launched at a pivotal moment in Parton’s career when she was transitioning to a solo journey, after dedicating seven years to Porter Wagoner’s weekly TV series and roadshow. One of the songs from the album, “I Will Always Love You”, is believed to have been penned by Parton as an expression of her regret over their professional separation. This song, released as the second single from the album, achieved number-one status on the country charts. The songs “Early Morning Breeze” and “Lonely Coming Down” were re-issued from previous albums. The first is a reworked version that originally featured on 1971’s “Coat of Many Colors” and the second made its initial appearance on Parton’s tribute album for Wagoner titled “My Favorite Songwriter, Porter Wagoner” in 1972.
A positive review of the album by Billboard said, “With the title taken from her latest hit single, Dolly goes about recording a whole bunch of others—hits, that is. There are perhaps five or six here which could stand on their own, including the exceptional ballad, ‘Lonely Coming Down’. Most of the writing is her own, as usual, and that’s always a plus.”
