Mötley Crüe’s third studio album, Theatre of Pain, was released on June 24, 1985. This release came in the midst of bassist-songwriter Nikki Sixx’s battle with heroin addiction, potential removal of guitarist Mick Mars from the band, and lead vocalist Vince Neil’s arrest for manslaughter resulting from drunk driving. With this album, Mötley Crüe began to shift away from their previous heavy metal sound and move towards the glam metal style they would become known for.
Although Theatre of Pain achieved chart success and received a quadruple platinum certification on June 5th, 1995; it faced significant criticism upon its initial release. People magazine stated that although Theatre of Pain contained some of their most accomplished work in the songs City Boy Blues and the Brownsville Station cover of Smokin’ in the Boys Room, the rest of the album was “thudding trash.” Terry Atkinson from LA Times described Theatre of Pain as having well-crafted but cliched lyrics sung by screechy vocals over weak and clumsy riffs.
Along with the aforementioned “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” Theatre of Pain also featured the hit power ballad “Home Sweet Home,” helping the album reach No. 6 on the US charts and No. 36 in the UK.
