Coal Chamber’s self-titled debut album holds a significant place in the history of American nu metal. Released on February 11, 1997, via Roadrunner Records, this album marked the band’s introduction to the music scene. The record featured three notable singles: “Loco,” “Big Truck,” and “Sway.” Both “Loco” and “Big Truck” were released in 1997, while “Sway” followed in 1998.

There has been a common misconception about the identity of the “creepy guy” featured on the album cover and in the music video for “Loco.” Many people have mistakenly thought he was Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne. However, the truth is that he is actually a real ice cream seller who frequented the Los Angeles neighbourhood where the band members resided.

As vocalist Dez Fafara confirmed to Revolver magazine:

Me and Meegs used to run out of my little one-bedroom apartment and grab an ice cream cone, [and] we got to know the guy. He allowed us to use it. He was just a really cool old man, and said, ‘Don’t mess up my decals; don’t spray paint anything on the truck.’ This is actually the truck that cruises around as we’re writing music [for the first album].

The album exceeded 100,000 copies during its first year, eventually selling around 3,000 copies a week. As a testament to its success, the album has been certified gold by the RIAA for surpassing 500,000 copies sold in the United States. It is the band’s most commercially successful release to date.
