“Tha Carter IV” is the ninth studio album by American rapper Lil Wayne, released on August 29, 2011, through Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Universal Republic Records. The recording process for the album began in late 2008, shortly after the release of Lil Wayne’s critically acclaimed sixth studio album, Tha Carter III (2008). However, the sessions were temporarily halted as Lil Wayne wanted to avoid rushing into another release that might not live up to the high standards of Tha Carter III.
During this interim period, Lil Wayne released two other albums in 2010: the rock-influenced Rebirth and I Am Not a Human Being, which reportedly contained unreleased material from the original Tha Carter IV sessions. This was due to Lil Wayne’s incarceration at Rikers Island prison for illegal possession of a weapon, preventing him from recording new material and further delaying the album’s progress.
After his release from prison, Lil Wayne re-recorded Tha Carter IV from scratch, collaborating with various producers, including Bangladesh, T-Minus, Kane Beatz, Streetrunner, Cool & Dre and Kanye West. The album features more introspective and morbid lyrical content, often accompanied by downtempo production, compared to its predecessors. Notable guest appearances include Cory Gunz, Drake, T-Pain, Tech N9ne, Andre 3000, Rick Ross, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Birdman, Kevin Rudolf, Jadakiss, Bun B, Nas, Shyne, and Busta Rhymes.
Despite a heavily delayed release, Tha Carter IV was finally made available to digital retailers at midnight on August 28, 2011, following Lil Wayne’s performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, with physical copies arriving the next day. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 964,000 copies in the United States during its first week, becoming Lil Wayne’s third album to top the chart. However, Tha Carter IV received mixed reviews from music critics, who were divided in their opinions on the album’s production and Lil Wayne’s performances, with some considering it a disappointment compared to his previous work.
The album cover features a childhood photograph of Lil Wayne. He is wearing a green Graduation Cap/Gown ensemble and his face is superimposed with his current facial tattoos and piercings. This cover is a continuation of the theme for his “Tha Carter III” album, which features a photograph of Lil Wayne as a baby with the same tattoos.
