“There Is a Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let’s Keep It a Secret” is the 3rd studio album by the English rock band Bring Me The Horizon (aka BMTH). The album was released on 4 October 2010 through the indie label Visible Noise.
Recorded in 2010 at the esteemed IF Studios in Frölunda, Sweden, this album is a dynamic creation produced by renowned figures Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd, known for their collaborations with leading metal bands. The album’s themes are deeply influenced by lead vocalist Oliver Sykes’ personal struggles with mental health and substance abuse, delving into issues of depression, anxiety, and redemption. The band explores new musical dimensions by integrating electronic elements and orchestral arrangements into their distinctive metalcore sound.
The cover artwork for “There Is A Hell…” is an exciting collaboration between frontman Oli Sykes and avant-garde graphic designer Jakob Printzlau (also known as Plastic Kid). Oli expressed his enthusiasm to Kerrang! magazine, sharing how he had admired Printzlau’s work since his teenage years. Following the release of ‘Suicide Season’, Printzlau showed interest in collaborating—a dream realised for the vocalist. “There Is A Hell…” is a concept album that explores humanity’s dual nature—juxtaposing celestial joy found in love and truth against our inner darkness. It’s a candid expression of Sykes’ fears and anger presented through an advanced musical framework that challenges traditional boundaries.
Oli describes the artwork as capturing both good and evil without relying on clichés like angels or demons; instead focusing on internal conflicts reminiscent of cult secrecy—a nod to ‘Eyes Wide Shut’. It achieved impressive chart success upon release: No. 17 on the UK Albums Chart & No.13 on the US Billboard 200—their highest rankings to date! It attained Gold status in the UK & received critical acclaim for its emotional depth & innovative sound.
“There Is a Hell…” has become pivotal not only within Bring Me The Horizon’s discography but also across the metalcore genre itself—frequently appearing among best albums lists for both year & decade. The album’s fusion of metalcore with electronic and orchestral elements set the stage for BMTH’s later experimental ventures and encouraged many other bands within the scene to broaden their musical horizons. The emotional vulnerability expressed in its lyrics also sparked a trend towards more personal and introspective songwriting within the genre.
Today, this album remains a landmark release in metalcore’s development, exemplifying Bring Me The Horizon’s artistic growth and their readiness to challenge genre conventions.
