“She’s So Unusual” is the debut studio album by American singer and songwriter, Cyndi Lauper. The album was launched on 14th October 1983 by Portrait Records and gave birth to six singles, including the globally successful “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” which was Lauper’s first song to feature on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Another notable track, “Time After Time,” not only achieved success in climbing up the charts but also received international recognition. The subsequent two singles, “She Bop” and “All Through the Night,” both managed to secure a position within the top five on various charts.

The album “She’s So Unusual” was promoted by the Fun Tour which took place between late 1983 and early 1984. Upon launch, it was met with favourable reviews from music critics who were particularly impressed by Lauper’s distinctive vocal style. The album brought Lauper multiple awards and recognitions, including two accolades at the prestigious 27th Grammy Awards, where she was named Best New Artist. “She’s So Unusual” achieved a high position of number four on the Billboard 200 chart and maintained its place in the top forty for an impressive duration of 65 weeks. Over six million copies were sold domestically and a staggering twenty-five million globally. As a result, the album remains Lauper’s most successful to date.

The album cover for the album was captured on Henderson Walk in Coney Island, New York by the renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. The creative direction and design were provided by Janet Perr. This iconic image was shot during the summer of 1983 and showed Cyndi Lauper in a vibrant red prom-style dress, which she procured from Screaming Mimi’s – a vintage clothing store where she previously worked. In the photograph, Lauper is seen clutching a bouquet that she bought from a local vendor on the boardwalk at the time of the photoshoot. Complementing her dress and bouquet, Lauper is embellished with an array of ornate costume jewellery adorning her ears, arms, neck and right ankle.

The album was re-released in 2014 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original edition. It was retitled, “She’s So Unusual: A 30th Anniversary Celebration.” This special edition includes demos and remixes of previously released material, along with new artwork.
