Reject All American, recorded in November 1995 and produced by John Goodmanson, has been well-received by music critics. David Browne from Entertainment Weekly expressed that the album offers a compelling 28-minute experience of relentless punk music, with mid-tempo pauses paying tribute to Kurt Cobain and Tony Randall. Robert Christgau’s review in Village Voice further applauded Kathleen Hanna’s vocal performance and Billy Karren’s guitar skills for adding depth and assurance to the album.

Bikini Kill was established in Olympia, Washington, in October 1990. The original lineup included Kathleen Hanna as the singer and songwriter, Billy Karren on guitar, Kathi Wilcox playing bass and Tobi Vail on drums. After releasing two albums and several EPs along with two compilations over their career span, the band decided to part ways in 1997. However, they made a comeback for tours in 2019 and again in 2022. During these tours Erica Dawn Lyle replaced Billy Karren as the guitarist.

The band is frequently recognised as trailblazers of the “Riot Grrrl” movement. This subculture is a fusion of feminism, punk music, and politics. It’s also perceived to have its roots in indie rock, with the punk scene acting as a catalyst for a movement that allowed women to articulate feelings of anger, rage and frustration – emotions that are typically deemed socially acceptable when expressed by male songwriters but less so for women.
